President and CEO
Mr Frank Downes
Mr Downes has led Grabba since it was founded and has provided the strategic, financial, marketing, product and international business development leadership that has seen the company achieve consistent, profitable revenue growth and product expansion. Key to Frank’s success has been his focus, his ability to martial and guide a highly skilled Engineering team, his commitment to research and development and to his passion for mentoring a young and capable team.
Frank has achieved global success for Grabba by consistently winning the support of large corporations that specialise in development and marketing of consumer targeted hand held computers and smartphones. He has created a wealth of support globally for Grabba products by focussing upon creating and showcasing attachable peripherals that enable use of the latest consumer targeted hand held computers as data collectors and tools for enabling transactions and capturing records of events. Uses that are beyond the normal what is expected of consumer targeted devices and which provide new sales opportunities for the manufacturers of such devices.
VP, Product Development, Grabba products
Mr Ces Luscombe
Mr Luscombe is CEO of Gripon Australia Pty Ltd and is responsible for the creation of the concepts upon which Grabba was founded. Ces showcased his initial Grabba product created to work with the Palm Pilot range of personal digital assistant, hand held computers in February 2002 in San Jose, CA. Shortly afterward he was introduced to Frank Downes when he recognised that he needed someone to Mentor him in how to commercialise the opportunity he had unearthed in San Jose. With Frank’s help in winning some grant funds and guiding Ces through the process of development of a strategy for commercialisation, Ces chose to spin Grabba out in Frank’s care in August 2003 while he continued to run his successful business focussed upon point of sale and barcode equipment and consumables. Ces is a founding director of Grabba.
In 2008, following the merger/acquisition of Fusion Sport by Grabba , Ces became actively involved in Grabba in the role of product manager for the Grabba product range and subsequently he became VP, Product Development for the Grabba product range.
VP, Fusion Product Business Development, Corporate
Dr Markus Deutsch
Dr Markus Deutsch conceived the Fusion Sport, Smartspeed system while undertaking his PHD at Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. A graduate in Sport Science from the University of Queensland, Markus completed his PHD researching the physiology of Rugby and worked closely with Rugby teams in New Zealand during his research.
Smartspeed was conceived in answer to the problem created by the failure of traditional methods of timing to reliable record the true impact of incremental change in performance of athletes in response to interventions by strength and conditioning coaching efforts. The error factor was due to “operator response time” inherent in hand triggered stop watches.
In late 2003 Markus and fellow founder Dr Douglas Moore founded Fusion Sport following success in winning the very first “Enterprise Award” $100,000 prize competition established by the University of Queensland. Shortly after winning the prize and as a supplementary prize, Fusion Sport was granted entry into the iLab business incubator. Grabba international entered the iLab incubator around the same time and it did not take long before Fusion and Grabba found a way to cooperate when Grabba licensed Fusion Sport to use Grabba technology to overcome a shortcoming in their initial manner of setting up and working with a hand held computer from HP iPaq used to control the Smartspeed system.
In July 2007 Markus found occasion to again engage with Grabba to overcome some challenges. Consequently a decision was made by the Directors of both Fusion Sport and Grabba to merge the two businesses because of the need for Fusion Sport to have access to the strong capability of Grabba in engineering and development of Electronic equipment. The two companies merged in January 2008 and Fusion Sport Founders Dr Deutsch and Dr Moore became Directors of Grabba International while Fusion Sport became a wholly owned subsidiary of Grabba International
Since January 2008 Markus has been able to concentrate his effort on product and business development for Fusion Sport with the outcome being strong growth for the product line and to sales of Fusion Sport product reaching and maintaining better than 35% of total Grabba International Sales. In 2009 Markus doubled to 20 the number of International Distributors of Fusion Sport Systems.
VP, Business Development, Grabba Product, North America
Mr Laurie Pane
Mr Pane joined Mr Downes in support of the fledgling Grabba business in September 2002 before Grabba International was incorporated.
Laurie provided Grabba with a base of operations in the United States that was a critical element in winning the support of Palm, Inc and the USA telephone service providers so that they would confidently evangelise Grabba peripherals to their Customers knowing that there was a domestic sales organisation in place in the USA.
An Australian by Birth, Laurie has been living in the USA since 1989 ?? and had long been involved in assisting Australian companies to gain a foothold in the USA when he and Frank Downes first met in 2001. He was first choice for Frank as a provider of order fulfilment services inside of the USA when it became obvious that the product evangelisation by marketing and sales people from Palm, Inc and Verizon, Sprint and AT&T as well as through the Grabba website had created strong demand for Grabba peripherals firs showcased in February 2002.
Laurie has been directly responsible for making it possible for Grabba to be “Born Global” and his involvement allowed Grabba to achieve over 90% of our business in the USA in 2002 through 2004 and to sustain above 50% of our business in North America through to the present.
